AfDB APPROVES U$1.5m SOLAR POWER PROJECT GRANT IN NORTHERN NIGERIA
Jigawa State Solar power progamme gets US$1.5m grant from AfDB.
The US$1.5m grant for the implementation of Jigawa state “One Giga Watt (GW) Independent Power Producer (IPP) Solar Procurement Programme”, have received approval from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The approval shows the commitment of the bank towards developing renewable energy and also increasing energy to one GW capacity. The grant will support the completion of outstanding technical and feasibility studies. Which also include the design of a master plan for the entire programme site.
The Implementation agency for the the grant will be an intergovernmental team led by Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria.
This grant will assist the government to achieve its goals of 75% electricity access on the continent by 2020. This renewable energy will also increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix to 30% by 2030. According to AfDB, it will also help to provide/distribute electricity to un-served and under-served areas, especially in Northern Nigeria.
AfDB said the outcome of the technical and feasibility studies will determine its willingness to provide additional support for the project.
