AfDB offers Ghana Agricultural sector US$60m loan
AfDB is set to approve US$60m loan to support farmers in Ghana’s Northern Savannah region.
The Board of Directors of African Development Bank (AfDB) are currently considering the approval of a US$60 million loan to support Ghana’s government Planting for Food and Jobs programme, which is a flagship programme that aims to encourage Ghanaian youths to venture into agri-related business.
The loan when approved will affect about 500,000 farmers, it will also help to increase food production and create more jobs especially in the northern region where agricultural activities are limited to peasant farming.
This report was confirmed by The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, while he was speaking on the sidelines of a technical consultative meeting on the AfDB’s Transformation of the African Savannah Initiative (TASI) in Accra.
According to him, just as the AfDB’s TASI project aims at supporting farmers in the Northern Savannah, the loan will be used to expand the reach of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme to affect farmers in that same region.
