ANGOLA: 5TH IN AFRICA HYDRO-POWER RANKING

Angola moves from 11th to 5th in Africa hydropower ranking.

Hydro capacity in Angola have grown from 400MW in 2016 to 1,108MW in 2017. This progress have moved the country to become one of five (5) largest hydropower(s) in the continent.

The local Laúca and Cambambe dams are also responsible for putting the country on the 2017 list of five nations with most increased hydroelectricity capacity.

Also, according to the International Hydroelectric Power Association (IHA) reports, in 2017 Africa added 1,924 MW to its installed capacity. Angola had a key role to play in this achievement. Globally, Angola is also among the 2017 most increased hydro-electricity capacity. Angola also came behind China, Brazil, India and Portugal.

In the past ranking Angola ranked 11th among 40 African countries in the hydro-electricity African classification. Currently, Angola now have an installed hydroelectric capacity of 2,415MW.

In full operation, US$4.5bn Lauca ( 2,070 MW) is going to be one of the largest dams in Southern Africa, beating the Mozambique’s Cahora Bassa (1,920 MW).
