DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO SIGN INGA III DAM PROJECT DEAL

DRC has sign a US$14 billion dam project that will help increase the nation electricity generation from the current 10%.

Democratic Republic of Congo has sign an 11,000-megawatt Inga III Hydro-electric Dam. This Dam will help boost the energy output in the nation and also provide better generation of electricity. It is a welcome development as only 10% of DRC’s population has access to electricity.

The contract was sign between the government of congo and a consortiums of Chinese and Spanish firms. Meanwhile, the deal will also grow the bilateral relationship between the nations involved in the project.

The project will also help to harness the nation hydroelectric power from River Congo which is in the western part of the country. According to the government, it is an important step even do it is not the final green light.

The first phase of the Grand Inga Hydro-power Project will make it potentially the world’s largest. Meanwhile, the project is worth US$14 billion, with an additional of US$4 billion for power transmission.

According to Congolese authorities, the project will generate over 25,000 direct jobs, with 10,000 permanent positions. The project will be in construction for six to seven years but no official kick-off date was announce. This is because the developers are still looking for money to kick start the project.

The Inga dam project is not only key to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s development but it is one of the the priority projects.
