DR CONGO TO COMMENCE CONSTRUCTION OF INGA3 HYDROPOWER

DR Congo begins plans for construction of Inga 3 hydropower project this year.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is planning to start the construction of the US$13.9bn Inga 3 Hydropower project this year. There have been previous delays on this project; but now a joint bid from two previously competing consortia of investors will see the project through.

The two consortia are China Three Gorges Corp and Actividades de Construccion y Servicios SA of Spain.

DR Congo is the biggest copper producer in Africa and also the largest source of cobalt in the world. The country have been making plans to build the Inga 3 for more than a decade now. The aim of the hydropower project is to tackle power shortage affecting the industry.

The plant will export 2,500MW of power to South Africa and will also form a part of a larger Grand Inga hydro power complex. According to World Bank, the complex will complete will produce as much as 50,000MW. The Inga 3 will produce 11,000 MW.

Construction of the power plant is estimated to take about seven (7) years.
