Drought to hit other cities in Africa asides from Cape Town.

Cape Town and other cities in Africa to face drought.

Plans for investment in water infrastructure in Africa needs to be set in place. As the count down to Cape Town drought comes close.

May 11 is the predicted date for the drought due to the current climate change.

Cape Town is not the only place in Africa that will be affected by this drought. Restrictions to water usage are been implemented in Cape Town which will affect the agricultural and industrial sectors.

The high migration from rural to urban makes it difficult for infrastructure to be expanded fast. Therefore, a number of people end up living in informal settlements.

Repeated scarcity

Nairobi and Accra has gone through this drought situations especially when their reservoir runs out during dry seasons.

Water shortage has frighten the lives of people in  these places as outset like cholera and typhoid could be terrible.

Nairobi’s water system was planned for a population of about half a million people, but it now has more than 4 million people.

The cities should plan for water reserves for a lot more than they expect ahead of time as they being flooded by people.

Rainy season

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company said last month that Kenya’s capital could face water shortages by April if the country’s main rainy season, from March to May, fails.

Kenya’s capital will expect drought if it rainy season from March to May does not come. Rationing of water started in January as Ndakaini Dam, was half empty.

Ghana Water Company announced last month that it would ration water in the capital, Accra. Also other parts of the country will face same rationing due to lack of rain and pollution of water bodies.
