FORENSIC PATHOLOGY FACILITY CONSTRUCTION KICK-OFF IN SOUTH AFRICA

Construction of a forensic pathology facility with a level 4 forensic service kick-off in South Africa.

The construction of a forensic facility has kick-off in Western cape town, south Africa. The facility will Meanwhile help substitute for the only Forensic Pathology Services Laboratory, in Salt River. The cost of constructing the project is worth US$ 23m and will be complete in mid-2019.

Department of Transport and Public Works is heading the project which will include 26 autopsy tables, four dissection suites with six tables each, as well as two teaching and training dissection suites. The project will also have 360 refrigerated body spaces 180 admission fridges and 180 dispatch fridges.

When the project is complete, it will make available Level 4 forensic services. The service will extract, analyze and preserve the integrity of evidence for use by the criminal justice system.

The project which is a 23-month project is a partnership between the Western Cape government health (WCGH) department and the transport and public works department.

Groote Schuur Hospital is currently the venue where the construction of the forensic facility is taking place.
