MAURITIUS AGREES TO CONSTRUCT AND EQUIP FLACQ HOSPITAL

Mauritius to construct and equip first teaching hospital – Flacq Teaching Hospital.

The republic of Mauritius have entered a loan agreement with Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. The agreement is for the financing of the construction and equipping of the first phase of Flacq Teaching Hospital project.

The project is to support the health sector development and to meet the demand for modern medical services. It is also for improvement of the quality of hospital and healthcare coverage in the Flacq district.

The signatories of the agreement were the Minister of Health and Quality of Life, Dr Anwar Husnoo, and the Deputy Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Mr Hamad Al-Omar.

According to Dr. Husnoo the project will provide adequate infrastructure and technical facilities. It will include specialized diagnostic and therapeutic care services that will focus on reducing morbidity and mortality. It will also focus on improving the health status of the Mauritius population.

The Kuwait Fund, the Saudi Fund for Development and the Arab Bank for Economic and Development in Africa will cover the loan to the tune of 20%, 39.5% and 15.8% respectively while the Government of Mauritius will cover about 24.4% of the total cost of the project.

When the new hospital is complete it will have 500 beds. It will also be the first teaching hospital in Mauritius.
