MOCUBA SOLAR POWER STATION CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN MOZAMBIQUE

The construction of mocuba solar power station begins in mozambique

The construction of the solar power plant has kick-off in the district of mocuba, central province of the country. The power station will be the largest solar power plant in sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa. It will also supply power to 175,000 households, with an estimate output of 80,000 megawatt hours per year. Apart from that, it will also increase the electricity capacity in the country.

The project is a public-private partnership between Scatec Solar,Norfund and Mozambique’s publicly-owned electricity company, EDM. The partnership which is sign for 25 years will be manage by CESOM (Central Solar de Mocuba), owned by Scatec Solar.

According to report, the project will cost US$76 million and it will be fund through equity of 14 million dollars, a grant of 7 million dollars, and project debt of 55 million dollars.

EDM chairperson, Mateus Magala said ”EDM is very pleased that the Mocuba Solar IPP project has reached financial close. He said that the partnership is well structure with excellent support from IFC and EAIF as lenders.”

Norfund Representative, Mark Davis said that “Norfund appreciates being a partner in this first solar power project in Mozambique. Access to reliable energy is a prerequisite for development. He also said that clean energy is therefore a focus investment area for us.”
