MSUNDUZI MUNICIPALITY RESIDENT UNHAPPY WITH UNFINISHED HOUSING PROJECT

Resident of Msunduzi Municipality unhappy with housing project construction in South Africa

The Msunduzi municipality residents are unhappy with the unfinished housing project in South Africa. Resident has been living in the house for more than eight years as the project was incomplete. The project was part of the Wirewall Rectification Programme for Beneficiaries of Msunduzi municipality.

The project was on hold due to poor performance by the contractor but until now it is still not finish. This has made the beneficiaries to occupy the building even when it is still under construction. Meanwhile In 2013, a new contractor was employ but there are delays due to challenges. This challenges are the demolition approvals and some missing beneficiaries.

Municipal spokesperson Ntobeko Ngcobo said The “R162-million project” was implemented because the municipality find-out that the previous homes were not suitable for human occupancy. She also said this is due to protruding wires which is causing electrical problems and shocking people.”

The project was to have each family having their own entrance with a kitchen, two bedrooms, living room and a bathroom. Meanwhile, the R162-million project was suppose to help the municipality.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu said “The conditions are shocking. As the government we are ashamed and we apologise to the residents. He also promised residents that he would take the matter to the Department of Human Settlements.”

Spokesperson for the provincial Department of Human Settlements Mbulelo Baloyi said, “We have responded to the Premier’s office and told them that the department is working on a plan to tackle the problem.”
