NAMIBIA GETS US $4.3M FROM AF FOR WATER TREATMENT PROJECT

Adaptation fund injects funds into Namibia’s water treatment project to help assist the treatment of poor quality local groundwater in the country.

The Adaptation Fund (AF) which is an international fund agency that is set up under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) who help finances projects and programs for developing countries has injected US $4.3m to assist the treatment of poor quality local groundwater in Namibia.

The Desert Research Foundation of Namibia (DRFN) is in charge of implementing,by utilizing renewable power and membrane technology to bring it to a level that complies with the national standards for drinking water, through the use of reverse osmosis.

The project will serve to increase the capacity and also integrate climate change adaptation considerations into water supply planning and policy processes and is expected to benefit individuals in vulnerable communities.

It will also aim to yield a wide range of information and knowledge on both technical and social aspects of establishing and operating such treatment and power plants.
