TANZANIA’S BAGAMOYO PORT CONSTRUCTION IN GOOD PROGRESS

Bagamoyo port construction in good progress but the country miss out on ownership after falling short of the required fund as per the contract signed with China and Oman.

The Bagamoyo Port is a proposed port to be constructed in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. The port which is the largest government infrastructure projects in the country and is expected to be the largest port in the east Africa.

The port construction is a collaboration of China and Oman which will see over around 190 industries, including the manure processing industry that will be put up by the government of Oman.

The port is expected to attract about 700 industries to become a strategic investment zone in East Africa when fully developed plus also help Tanzania to become East Africa’s leading shipping and logistics centre.

Tanzania miss out on ownership of the US $10 billion Bagamoyo Port and Special Economic Zone project because during the three-way partnership signed with Oman and China in 2013, the country was to raise US $28 million for compensating landowners who were to be displaced but managed to raise only US $1.5 million and compensated a few of the 2,180 registered residents of the area earmarked for the project.

The port is located about 75 kilometres from Dar es Salaam and 10 kilometres from Bagamoyo town will kick off operations between 2020 and 2021.

It is great news for the country as well as for the region. It will boost the trade and employment opportunity for thousands of tanzanians.
The serious issue is the when is it starting. The answer has been misleading for past 4 years. Every time it has passed the given date and work hasn’t started yet. Let’s hope for the best and wait until the next day off starting the project.

I have been reading so many articles and following the news about this project. The timeline is so confusing. Some articles mention that the project will take 10 years while it was expected to start in 2017 and start operating in 2020/2021. In fact, I don’t even know if the project started or not.
