TRADE MINISTER ASSURES COMPETITORS OVER SGR OPERATION IN TANZANIA

Trade Minister address competitor’s fear over SGR immediate operation in Tanzania

With the immediate complete of the Standard Gauge Railway, Competitors are afraid that their own business will be on hold. This was address during a Transporters Association of Tanzania annual general meeting as competitors became worried.

In an effort to stop the fear, the minister said that the SGR will not limit work. This is due to fears of possible collapse of road freight when the standard-gauge railway (SGR) becomes operational.

Industry, Trade and Investment minister Charles Mwijage said “Don’t fear, Just be innovative, increase your efficiency and be prepare for more business when SGR becomes operational.”

Meanwhile, Competitors are scared because in Tanzania Road freight is a huge business. This is because most of the railways are in poor conditions which is making the road to serve over 90% .

Outgoing president Zacharia Hans Poppe told the minister that transporters faced challenges of conflicting regulations. He also said “Parking space is inadequate at the Dar es Salaam port especially at the gate 5, leading to frequent arrests of drivers by municipal authorities when they park in unauthorised areas.”

In response to it, the minister promise the transporters that the government would work on the challenges. He also advise them to work together for the common cause.

The SGR will link the country to different neighbouring countries of Rwanda and Uganda which will help to transport good and people more faster.
