ZIMBABWE RECEIVED FUNDS FROM JAPAN FOR ROAD PROJECT

Japan grants US$21 million to zimbabwe for road project which will help boost the nation economic.

Japan has given the sum of US$21 million to Zimbabwe which will aid in improving road projects. The grant will also be use to steep gradients on the Makuti-Chirundu section of the North-South Corridor.

The grant which are non-reimbursable funds will be use to acquire product and service. This product and service will help the economic and social development. It will also reduce accidents in the area and make Makuti-Chirundu highway navigable.

In 2016, accidents recorded are over 110 from the 6,5 kilometre long stretch. Due to these problem, the new design will help reduce the number of accident to below 20%.

The road is of major importance because it helps transport large goods into the nation from different Africa countries. Countries like Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo and some East Africa use the road for transporting goods.

Once the project is complete, it will enable Zimbabwe transport greater volume of goods through the Highway. The road plays a key role in the country’s economic development.

The road project will entails construction of climbing lanes and the improvement of the horizontal and/ or vertical alignment. It will also be use as a model for future improvement of other steep sections of highway in the region.

The project will also create over  250 jobs with construction set to kick-off this year and completion in 2021.
