AFRICA’s LARGEST METRO STATION
Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has launched Africa’s largest metro station in Cairo.
The middle East’s largest metro station Heliopolis station was constructed to better facilitate Egypt’s fastest means of transportation. The Egyptian Transportation Minister Kamel al-Wazir during the launching ceremony said the facility was built on 10,000 square meters and cost about US $116.8 million.
The metro station was built according to international standard and is fully air conditioned.Meanwhile, the three level station is 225 meters long, 22 meters wide and 28 meters beneath street level. It also has 18 fixed stairways, 17 escalators, 8 exit and entrance and 4 elevators.
The 45 kilometer long third line connects the east and the west of Cairo and is also linked with the first and second lines. In addition, the third line will be also connecting Cairo with the new administrative capital through the electric train which is still under construction.
Large number of the citizens use this metro station hence reducing the traffic congestion in the busy city. The prices of tickets was increased last year based on distance traveled to meet up for the huge sum spent on maintenance during the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
5,000 square meters of the station will be used for commercial purposes to help strengthen the economy of Cairo.
