ALGERIA TRANS-SAHARAN HIGHWAY PROJECT COMPLETED

Part of the Trans-Saharan Highway in Algeria is now complete.

The construction of the 1,600km Trans-Saharan Highway project in Algeria is now complete. Work is also in progress on another 200km road in south-Algeria and it will soon be complete. Algeria, said the completed infrastructure is a fundamental factor for economic activity, growth, trade and investment.

The highway project is vital in the interconnection and integration of Africa. It is also plays an important role in improving living conditions for people.

The 4,500km Trans-Saharan Highway links Algiers to Lagos in Nigeria. Moreover, the highway will contribute to the commercial development exchanges through roads as well as promoting regional integration across Africa.

The continental-scale infrastructure passes through six African countries, namely Niger, Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, Mali, and also Chad.

Representatives from the Commission of the European Union, Arab Bank for Economic Development, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the African Development Bank, discussed about the countries’ infrastructure concerns at the 68th session of the committee.

The meeting focused on review of the progress of the highway and the consultation on future steps to be taken with the countries concerned in order to carry out its realization and delivery as soon as possible.
