BUILDING MATERIALS LAB CONSTRUCTION TO KICK-OFF AFTER FUNDS WAS SECURED IN UGANDA

The plans to have a building material laboratory is going to be realised after fund for the project was secured.

The laboratory construction will aimed at reducing the usage of substandard Materials by ensuring that quality materials are used when it comes to the construction of building and roads in the country.

Ronald Menya, who is the works superviser and consultant from Infrastructure Development and Management Company Limited said the project is being funded by the World Bank under Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Programme at a construction cost of Shs350m.

Quoting Menya, “The equipment will test all the buildings to see whether they are habitable, while an enforcement team of engineers will be constituted to inspect all buildings that are being erected in Jinja City before they are occupied.”

He also noted that, some of the materials that will be tested include soil samples, sand, asphalt, concrete, cement, timber, bricks, stones and iron bars, among others.

The idea to have a laboratory became necessary after six people died and several others sustained injuries after a two-storeyed building on Plot 17, Gokhale Road in Jinja City collapsed nine month ago.

The construction, which started in February, is expected to be completed in May 2021, after installation of all necessary material-testing machines.
