BULAWAYO COUNCIL CUT WATER SUPPLY FOR SUBURBS IN ZIMBABWE

Bulawayo City Council has decided to cut water supply to all residential suburbs according to Town Clerk Christopher Dube

The unprecedented move will likely poised a serious health challenge caught most residents by surprise.

Speaking to the media, Dube said the local authority had been forced to cut supplies for the whole city save for the central business district (CBD), industries and mines due to raw water pumping challenges.

Quoting Dube, “The City of Bulawayo would like to advise the public of water supply interruption citywide. The interruption is due to loss of electricity on both the Nyamandlovu -Cowdray Park line feeding Magwegwe Reservoir and the Ncema-Fernhill line feeding Park line feeding Tuli and Criterion reservoirs,”

He further stated that “All the suburbs in the eastern and western areas are closed except for the central business district, industry and mines.”

“In light of that, consumers are further advised that if electricity is restored, the system will need time to build up and stabilise. Council will advise accordingly as to which areas will be opened as soon as the system normalises.”

So far, the city of Bulawayo is experiencing an acute shortage of water which has resulted in the city decommissioning three of its major water supply dams namely: Umzingwane, Upper Ncema and Lower Ncema. This is associated with the recent theft of two kilometres long electricity supply cables at the city’s water reservoirs.

Meanwhile, resident are unhappy as most people say the council is not organised after failing to fix the problem last Friday which made them to revert to the 144-hour weekly shedding programme that was implemented in May this year.
