CEMENT FACTORY FAILS TO KICK-OFF AFTER BEEN COMMISIONED 10YEARS AGO IN KENYA

The lack of proper management facing African countries is quite alarming especially when it has to do with the infrastructure industry.

For 10years now, a multi-million-shilling cement factory in Sebit, West Pokot County, has not kicked off after it was commissioned by then Prime Minister Raila Odinga in July 2010.

The project which promised to lift hopes among residence has been dashed as it was expected to benefit economically and socially from job opportunities.

Residences in the area attributed the project’s delayed implementation to political rivalry among local leaders and government departments and want the contentious issues resolved.

One of the residents, Emmanuel Limarusi while speaking to reporters said “We fail to understand why this project is taking so long to kick off despite the investor making several visits to the site.”

Meanwhile, the residents are opposed to a move by some private developers who want to buy the land at Sh400,000 per acre.

According to another resident James Obama, “There is an investor who has been mapping this area intending to buy it from us, We have been waiting for a cement factory for the last 10 years. We cannot accept Sh400,000 per acre because we need a long-term investment,”

The original design for the project was to put up an ultra-modern, environmentally friendly cement factory, along with staff houses, schools, medical centre, staff training centre and other amenities.

Cemtech Limited won tender to implement the Sh1.2 billion cement factory with the plan to employ more than 4500 people but 10years on not a single structure has been built.

The main question now is, should residence take the offer on ground that is proposed by the private investor or should they continue to wait for a government that has constantly failed them over the last decade??
