CONSTRUCTION OF SEMWA DAM RESUME IN ZIMBABWE

Semwa Dam construction resume after the project was included in Zimbabwe 2019 budget.

Construction of the Semwa dam is set to resume in Zimbabwe after funds were provided. The project which kick-off in 2014 was originally set for completion in three years time but had financial issues.

According to report, the dam will provide irrigation water sufficient to irrigate 12,000 hectares in the two districts. It will also provide water for domestic use at the expanding Rushinga Business centre. The contract was awarded to China Nanchang in 2006 but construction work came to a halt during the hyper-inflationary period.

The construction has resume normal activities after US$20m was allocated for the project in the 2019 budget. Meanwhile, the project will also help generate hydro-electric power to be fed into the national grid.

Minister for land, Agriculture and water Perence Shiri Said “The Dam has the potential to bring socio-economic transformation. He also said area like food security, employment creation and steady water will benefit from it.”

Meanwhile, as part of plans to make the process go smooth, Funds will be available for feasibility studies and a master plan. The fund is said to be worth U$2.5m which the government has already approve for the projects.

The new date for completion is now set for 2021 after the originally completion date was move due to financial problems. Meanwhile, the Minister said that the project is among some projects that the government is planning to undergo this year.

The construction of the dam is important as it will help prevent disaster in areas that are lacking access to water. It will also help increase the percentage of the nation dam level from the existing 70%. The dam will further grow the nation economy as well as averting any future problems in the future.
