DAM LEVEL DECLINE AS WATER DROUGHT SET TO CONTINUE IN SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa water crisis is set to continue after dam level decline by 0.6% over the past week (4 May to 10 May) to 54.3% of total capacity.

This is surely an alarming time for the nation already recording one of the highest number of covid19 cases in Africa.

Xanthea Limberg, mayoral committee member for water and waste said “Although the bulk of the region’s rainfall traditionally falls between May and June, so it is still too early to read much into these statistics – rainfall in 2020 to date is lower than the long-term average between January and April”.

He further said water consumption is also well below the long-term average, so low rainfall is not a significant cause for concern.

The City of Cape Town in march, temporarily suspended water restrictions for those in arrears with their municipal accounts because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The City announced in a statement that customers need to accept this temporary action in good faith and to continue to use water sparingly, and only for health and hygiene purposes.
