FACEBOOK TO COMMISSION COMMUNITY HUB IN NIGERIA

Facebook to support Nigerian software developers and technology entrepreneurs.

Aiming at supporting software developers and technology entrepreneurs across the continent, Social media giants, Facebook are planning to open a Community Hub Space in Nigeria next year. The centre will train  50,000 Nigerians in digital skills, and would act as an incubator programme for I.T startups.

The growing population of Africans adopting mobile technology and the falling cost of data have made Africa a target destination for Technology companies who are seeking more users, and Facebook is the latest technology firm who is seizing this opportunity by introducing its training programme.

According to Facebook, the training – aimed at software developers, entrepreneurs and students – would be offered in Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Calabar and Kaduna.

Last year, Mark Zuckerberg – Facebook founder, visited technology companies in Lagos, Nigeria, and this led to a US$24 million donation to Andela (a firm which trains developers).
Google’s Chief Executive who also visited Lagos in July, said that Facebook is looking to train 10 million people across the continent in online skills over the next five years. Also 100,000 software developers will trained in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.

According statistics more than 22 million people in Nigeria use Facebook website every month.
