GHANA AND CHINA SIGN US$500M RAILWAY DEAL

The Deal which is worth US$500 Million will consist of both passenger and freight Services.

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) and China Railway Wuju Group Corporation (CRWJ) have signed a railway deal. This deal will enable both nation continue their quest of developing a new Standard Gauge Western line.

The project which is worth US$500 million will have both passenger and freight services. Meanwhile, the agreement also covers the Manso through Tarkwa to Dunkwa section of the line; which is approximately 100 kilometer that needs to be developed.

Present at the signing ceremony in Beijing, were Joe Ghartey, Siisi Essuman-Ocran, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Railways Development and Sylvester Williams a Chief State Attorney at the Attorney General’s office.

Joe Ghartey who led the Ghanaian delegate said a total railway network of 947km was handed to Ghana in 1957.

According to Ghartey, By 2017, less than 100km of the railway network was operational.  This illustrate the state of Ghana’s railway system.

Mr Ghartey also disclose that several work on the section of the railway line has been performed since the creation of the Ministry of Railways Development by President Akufo-Addo in 2017.  

Based on the agreement with  CRWJ, the completion of the first phase has a one year time frame.

Deputy General Manager of CRWJ, Mr Lui Youg appreciate the delegation for the opportunity. He also outline that the contract is the biggest project in Ghana.

Youg further assured the delegation that CRWJ would ensure the terms of the agreement are followed with and fulfilled to the latter.
