GRCL AWAITS APPROVAL FOR ACCRA-NSAWAM RAILWAY LINE
Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) has completed the rehabilitation of five coaches and a narrow-gauge line from Accra to Nsawam.
Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) has completed the rehabilitation of five coaches and a narrow-gauge line from Accra to Nsawam.
GRCL now waits approval from Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) who regulates the railway sector in Ghana. This approval is needed before any commercial operation will kick-off.
Managing Director of the GRCL, Mr John Essel said ”The renew standard train is in good shape. However, it is ready for commercial operations.”
Mr Essel made the remark during an inspection check from the Minister of Railways Development, Mr Joe Ghartey.

The rehabilitation took GRCL six months to complete. Such process include entailing works on the body, spraying, paneling, seating. It also include repair of buggies, among others coaches and as well as the line.
The coaches will have a seating capacity of 56 passengers for the first-class. While 93 passengers seating capacity will be for second class.
GRCL engaged a team of 300 local workers to work on the project according to Essel. While GRCL have inform GRDA to evaluate the work and give the approval to operate commercially.
Minister of Railways Development, Mr Joe Ghartey said the rehabilitation became necessary following a derailment of an Accra bound Diesel unit.
Mr Ghartey also assure GRCL that they will finish the test run as soon as possible. This will enable them assess if the train will be okay for public use.
Chief Executive Officer of the GRDA, Mr Richard Dombo said hopefully a test run on the project will be check by the end of the week. That the main focus for the test run was to ensure the train will be safe for commercial operations.
