ISRAELI FIRM AWARDED NIGERIAN WATERWAYS SECURITY CONTRACT
Nigeria Employs Israeli Security Firm to Police its waterways.
The Federal Government of Nigeria in a bid to check and tackle the rising rate of crime and piracy along its territorial waters has concluded plans to employ the services of an Israeli firm for the security of its waterways.
The contract entails procurement of security equipment and training of the Nigerian Armed Forces especially The Navy on how best to police the country’s waters effectively.
This announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi at the World Maritime Day event held in Lagos. During the announcement although the Minister did not mention the name of the firm, he said that the services of the firm will begin in December and will last for three years after which the company will handover to Nigerian security personnel.
He also mentioned that this development will save shipping companies over US$180 million (N55.62 billion) in security fees.
