KARATINA RESIDENT FACE BUILDING DEMOLITION IN KENYA

The rehabilitation of the Nairobi-Nanyuki line is causing serious problem for residents in Katarina town.

Due to the rehabilitation, several building has been marked for demolition making resident to panic.

Over the weekend, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) pulled down hundreds of other structures which had been erected by traders near the railway line.

According to KRC, the resident were issued with a “final” notice last week to vacate, as failure to do so will bring a forceful ejected which was seen over the weekend.

Local media report that, Twelve buildings, six of them high-rise residential apartments including a church had been marked for demolition.

Some tenants said they had been given 30 days to look for alternative accommodation. While at least thirty kiosk owners lost goods worth millions of shillings after their structures were demolished.

The standoff between traders and KRC will surely continue during these demolition phase, but the question now is should they have been given more time to relocate their business? Or did KRC acted in the best interest of the nation’s economy?
