KENYA LOSSES USD 39 MILLION ADVANCE PAYMENT ON ITARE DAM

Kenya investigates USD 39 million spent on the failed Itare Dam project.

Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (RVWWDA) is currently facing investigations from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over the alleged graft in the USD 39 million failed Itare Dam Project. The agency had awarded CMC Di Ravenna – an Italian construction company the contract to build a dam in the Northwest of Nairobi.

Series of issues have stalled the project! Read this report from an investigative reporter who visited the site and gathered eyewitness information.

The situation is messy, and taxpayers should prepare for the huge financial loss!

“The company’s operations have been well-managed in respect to the Itare Dam project until September 2018 when the government agency failed to service a request amounting to USD 3 million. This left the company with no choice than to suspend operations at the site,” said CMC Di Ravenna in its notice to wind up Kenya operations.

Among the reasons that lead to the failed project is the fact that the Kenyan government did not get necessary environmental permits before signing the contract with the company. “This took place after the contract had come into full force and effect in April 2016, while the contractor was already mobilized on site with staff, equipment and personnel, leaving them practically idle until April 2017 when commencement of works had been issued,” said the company’s lawyer, Mr Robert Amsterdam.
