LIBERIA PRESIDENT DEDICATES NEW HEALTH FACILITY
President weah commission new health facility at JFKMC, but is there funds and plans available for local healthcare centres around the country?
Health care is vital for every nation as it enable people that are injured or sick have the required treatment. This has made Liberia government to provide more facilities for its nation.
During the unveiling of the new facilities at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC) in Monrovia, President Weah promise to meet the health needs for the country.
However, Chief Executive Officer of JFKMC, Dr. Jerry F. Brown said the dedicatory ceremony is the implementation of Pillar 44 of the government’s Pro-poor agenda. According to he, it will ensure that the country’s major referral hospitals become equipped to provide quality and affordable healthcare services to all people.
Why is the facilities important to the nation?
Liberians have a life expectancy at birth of just 35 years, an infant mortality rate of 71 per 1000 live births and the mortality rate for children under 5 years is 110 per 1000 live births.
According to health report in 2006, Liberia has 5,000 full-time or part-time health workers and 51 Liberian doctors to cater for a population of 3.8 million. The nation currently rely on international community for health infrastructure and aid.
However, the new facility is of great importance as it will help solve most of the nation challenges. The facility include a mobile type of the CT Scan, movable Operating Theaters, Pathology Laboratory, and a Center of Excellence for Infectious Diseases. It can also help detect breast cancer, and be able to give proper treatment.
What are the plans for other healthcare around the country?
Most people will wonder if John F. Kennedy Medical Center is given more preference because it is bearing a famous name. While others will feels that a plan should be produced at least that will include local health care centres.
The government should try and focus on local community healthcare. Fund should be acquired for local healthcare centres as most cases are often found in such areas.
