THE REPUBLIC OF MALAWI CELEBRATES ITS 54 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE TODAY

The Republic of Malawi is a beautiful country that offers so much to visitors. This landlocked country provides an ever-changing and diverse landscape. It is bordered by Zambia to the north west, Tanzania to the north east and Mozambique to the south, south west and south east. It is one of the safest countries in Africa.

FUN FACTS ABOUT MALAWI

  • Before independence, Malawi was known as Nyasaland. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi.  This is old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area
  • Apparently, It is nicknamed ‘The warm heart of Africa’ due to it’s friendly population! How lovely!
  • They Gained independence (from the UK): 6 July 1964
  • This was the first African country to produce tea on a commercial basis and boasts the first Carlsberg brewery outside Denmark. Carlsberg is now the official beer of the  National football team!
  • here they grow sugarcane, cotton, tobacco and tea and rears cattle.
  • Although their biggest export is tobacco. There tea is across the globe. Many of the world-renowned tea brands such as Twining, PG Tips and Five Roses use Malawi tea leaves.
