Independence Day: Mauritania

On the 28th Day of November in 1960. The Islamic Republic of Mauritania gained its independence from France. It is a Northwestern Country with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, and Sahara Desert – more than 80 percent of the land mass is desert. Thereby, forcing majority of the human population to reside in the cooler southern part of the nation. The weather can be very hot, although night time temperatures can dip below 7 degrees celsius.

The national economy is supported by its natural resources like gold, iron ore and recently crude oil, that is exported unprocessed. The coastal waters is another major source of revenue, being lucrative and contributing to the economic activities. More than half the population depend on farming and raising livestock. Politically, President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is serving his second term and has continued to focus on bolstering his anti-terrorism credentials.

In ensuring national development, the country continues to push for industrialisation and cooperation with other nations and foreign investors.
