The island was first discovered by Arabs sailors who named it as Dina Arobi. The island was named Mauritius in 1598 to honor Prince Maurits van Nassau during the Dutch period.

The extinct Dodo is the islands national animal and has only ever been found on Mauritius. Despite its extinction, the dodo remains Mauritius’ national animal.

The Post Office Museum is also a place to visit while in the island. There you can see Mauritius first stamp, the famous ‘Blue Mauritius’ stamp. It shows Queen Victoria on a blue background.
