MBALE COUNCIL RECEIVES Shs10 BILLIONS FOR REHABILITATION OF ROAD

Rehabilitation of road set to kick-off after fund was release to the Council under USMID.

Mbale Municipal Council in Uganda has receive the sum of Shs10 billion for the rehabilitation of roads. The fund is under Uganda Support to Municipality Infrastructure Development (USMID) from the World Bank.

The fund will help repair the road which has been a major problem for residents. Meanwhile the roads up for rehabilitation are; Naboa and Cathedral Avenue following the completion of Republic Street. It will also include Nabuyoga Rise, Pallisa Road and Mugisu hill under the same programme in the first phase.

USMID programme coordinator, Rhoda Nyaribi said “We are waiting for Parliament approval and by October, we will have the money. She also said the procurement process will kick off immediately, and the project will start by January next year.”

The first phase of the USMID programme kicked-off in 2014 with Plinth Technical Services Company Ltd getting the contract, but the firm’s failure to deliver on some many occasion led to termination of the contract.

The  contract was re-awarded to Chinese company Zong Mei, and so far installed functioning street lights, worked on the drainage system. According to the company officials, the works completion rate is at 90 per cent.

Mbale assistant town clerk, Kenneth Khatuli said “We have learnt from our past weaknesses and mistakes. He also said We are going to be strict in the procurement process so that we do not hire incompetent contractors.”
