Independence Day in Mozambique

TODAY is Independence Day in Mozambique, celebrating its independence from Portugal on June 25, 1975.

After over four centuries of Portuguese rule, they gained independence in 1975, becoming the People’s Republic of Mozambique shortly thereafter.

Mozambique is a country in Southeast Africa. The official name of the country is the Republic of Mozambique. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. It is the 35th largest country in the world in terms of land area with 801,590 square kilometers. The official language is Portuguese.

 

Its coastline is a major attraction for visitors, not only because of its beautiful beaches, but also for its amazing marine wildlife and rich coral reefs. Monte Binga is the highest mountain in the country.  It is located on the border between Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The official currency is the New Metical.

Maputo is the capital and largest city. It is known as the City of Acacias, in reference to acacia trees commonly found along its avenues, and the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. It is a vibrant city with a population of 1.5m, with white sandy beaches and a mural showing the civil war which is 95 metres long. Maputo Elephant Reserve is home to a herd of 350 elephants.

Spelt out in Scrabble tiles, Mozambique is the only one word country to scores 34 points. It is the only country with a single word name that includes all five vowels.
