NIGERIA GOVERNMENT PLANS TO GENERATE 14,000MW HYDROPOWER

Nigeria government plans to increase its hydropower capacity from 12,000mw to 14,000mw.

The project which was investigated by both the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has found out that the country can generated 14,000mw of hydropower. According to the investigation which shows that it will comprises of large, medium and small scheme hydropower across the country.

The country currently generates a bulk of its electricity from thermal plants and has plant in different areas of the country which include Egbin, Aba power plant, Afam power plant, Olaoji power plant, Calabar power plant, and Omotosho power plant among others.

Future Energy Nigeria Director, Ade Yesufu; “Nigeria is planning significant improvement towards achieving structural economic change with a more diversified and inclusive economy that the nation’s power sector knows best what to do; stand together and make it happen.”

Executive Director of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, ANED, Barr. Sunday Oduntan has identified liquidity, huge debt, vandalism and others as the problems of the sector in the country.

The Minister of Power; Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has attributed the challenges faces in the sector to lack of sufficient investments. The country has already installed 12,000MW power capacity but only 6000mw is serving the nation.
