ORASCOM, TOYOTA AND ENGIE PARTNERS TO BUILD THE GULF OF SUEZ WIND FARM IN EGYPT.

The US$2.2bn Gulf of Suez wind farm will be completed in October.

Egypt is one of the African countries that acknowledges that the benefits of renewable energy out weighs that of the convention source of power generation. As a country, they are working towards making 20% of their power generation (which is presently at 10.5%) be from clean renewable energy sources by 2020. Considering their soon to come world’s largest solar park.

The wind farm which will be at Ras Gharib, in the Gulf of Suez is another way of making this dream come through. Gulf of Suez is a park owned by Engie Construction (A French company), Orascom Construction (an Egyptian Company), Toyota Tousha Corporation and Eurus Energy Holding Corporation. The project is 85% complete presently and is stipulated to be done by October.  Therefore, trial run will be done in November and finally commissioned by the end of 2019.

Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) will buy electricity from the 250MW wind farm at 3.8 piaster per KW/h.

The dream of attaining 20% of the electricity generated to the grid from renewables has attracted foreign investments worth over US$2bn as well as providing lots employment opportunity to the the citizens.

If other countries in Africa will emanate visions similar to this, then in no distance future, Africa will be continent to dream of. But are there plans for Egypt’s Engineers to learn how to independently carry out these projects?
