Parliament speaker urge Government to abandon construction of Murchison Falls Dam
Uganda Speaker for Parliament has urge the Government to Abandon the proposed power dam construction. According to her, she is seeking assurance from the government. This will enable the Murchison Falls to be untouchable.
Early this month, a publication was release that a dam will be constructed. According to the Publication Bonang Power Energy Ltd is to build a hydropower-dam at Murchison Falls in Murchison Falls National Park in Nwoya and Nakasongola districts. This dam will have an installed capacity of 360-megawatts.
Speaker of Parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga said “The country is on tension; the hoteliers are on tension and our tourism industry is under threat. We need early assurance on this issue.”
The publication sparked outrage from environmentalists and tourism sector participants. It also prompted an online petition which had over 8,500 people signature opposing the dam construction .
State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatization Evelyn Anite said “I don’t see the logic of constructing a dam and generating electricity there. I agree with the bigger public opinion that we (government) should not.”
Tourism minister, Prof Ephraim Kamuntu said ”What has happened so far was just a notice [on intention to develop dam at Murchison Falls]; it is not a project.”
