PRESIDENT BUHARI APPOINTS NEW NNPC GMD AND NNPC CHAIRMAN

NNPC now has a new GMD and a new acting Chairman.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) recently had series of changes in its various management positions. The National Oil firm NNPC now has a new GMD and a new acting Chairman.

Nigeria’s President,  Muhammadu Buhari recently appointed Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari to replace Dr. Maikanti Baru as the new Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC. However, he is to resume office from 8 July, 2019. That is after the end of the current GMD’s (Dr. Maikanti Baru) tenure on July 7, 2019.

Mr. Kyrari before his appointment doubled as Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division of NNPC and also Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC.

NNPC Chief Operating Officers

Asides appointing a new GMD, the corporation also saw the appointment of seven new Chief Operating Officers (COO) by the president. The new COOs include:

  • Mr. Roland Onoriode Ewubare (South-South) – Chief Operating Officer, Upstream
  • Engr. Mustapha Yinusa Yakubu (North Central) – Chief Operating Officer Refining and Petrochemicals
  • Engr. Yusuf Usman (North East) – Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power
  • Ms. Lawrencia Nwadiabuwa Ndupu (South East), Chief Operating Officer Ventures
  • Mr. Umar Isa Ajiya (North West) – Chief Financial Officer
  • Engr. Adeyemi Adetunji (South West) – Chief Operating Officer, Downstream and lastly,
  • Mr. Farouk Garba Said (North West) – Chief Operating Officer, Corporate Services.

NNPC new Acting Chairman

After the inauguration of President Buhari on May 29, 2019; he is yet to name members of his cabinet. Because of that, there is currently no Minister of Petroleum Resources or Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. However, the President have recently appointed Dr Thomas John to be the acting alternate chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This new appointment which is to take effect immediately brings to end the tenure of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu.

Before his appointment, Dr John was a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC. He was also a member of NNPC Governing Board.

Dr Thomas John, will hold the position of Acting Alternate Chairman of the Governing Board until a new Minister of Petroleum Resources or Minister of State for Petroleum Resources is appointed to assume the same position. This is certainly in accordance to Sections 1(3) and 2(1) of the NNPC Act.
