PROTEST ERUPTS AFTER GOVT. FAILED PROMISE IN SA

Houseowners has protest over government failed promise to build the RDP homes.

Residents was asked to demolished the structures built in 1998 after government promise to rebuild the homes. But after waiting for so long they decided to protect about the delay.

Since the structure was domolished early this year, nothing has happened due to the Covid-19 and a legal issue with one of the building contractors.

The protest which started on tuesday saw Dozens of residents from KwaDwesi Extension, Port Elizabeth, blocked roads with rocks and burning tyres. According to them, they are demanding that 50 RDP houses be immediately rebuilt.

This protecters demanded that motorists pay R10 in order to pass. As it continued on Wednesday, until the ward councillor addressed them.

One of the homeowners, Fundiswa Mfanta said”In January our ward councillor told us to demolish our poorly built RDPs for the rectification programme. Our houses had huge cracks in the walls, and no cement foundations. They were just halls with a flushing toilet but no ceiling on them.”
