RWANDA GETS US $60M FOR WATER PROJECT FROM EAIF

Rwanda government secure funds for the construction of a water treatment plant in the state capital.

The construction of  the water treatment plant in Rwanda is been financed by The Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) and it is expected to be the first Bulk Surface Water Supply in sub-Saharan Africa using a public/private partnership (PPP) model.

The project is inline with Rwanda aim to see 100% of its 12.4m people having reliable access to clean water within the next few years. The current statistics show that some 86% of urban areas and 72% of rural areas have access to improved sources of drinking water.

Chairman of EAIF, David White; “The conclusion of the financing is tremendous news for Rwanda. Fresh, clean water has a fundamental role to play in economic development and water-dependent businesses like hotels, food processing and leisure, will have greater confidence in investing in Kigali.”

The plant when completed will have the capacity of to supply up to 500,000 people in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali and will also provide 40m litres of fresh, clean water a day plus also the facility will provide around one third of Kigali’s water.

The construction of the plant will be located at Kanzenze, south of Kigali.
