SOLAR ENERGY TO HELP ENHANCE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION IN NIGERIA

Sokoto government to use solar power for rural electrification.

At a News conference in Sokoto , the special adviser to Governor Aminu Tambuwal on Public Private Partnership (PPP), Alhaji Bashir Gidado, disclosed that the state government have started the process of connecting rural households to solar power. This move is aimed at increasing energy usage and enhancing rural electrification in the region.

The project, with its pilot scheme already in progress in Kurdula, a rural settlement in Balle town of Gudu local government area is a partnership between the state government, Nigeria Energy Support Project (NESP), GIZ of Germany and GoSolar.

The off grid mini solar project is to provide affordable solar power to rural communities that the national grid does not cover using solar energy which is abundant in Sokoto state.

Currently, the installation of the distribution network have been completed by GIZ, the next phase is the generation network, which will be provided by GoSolar. Lands have been provided for the project and the government have made plans to compensate all affected persons.

The project is being coordinated by a state working group, with membership drawn from relevant ministries, departments and agencies and the office of secretary to state government.

Hopefully, the project will be unveiled in three(3) months time.
