SOUTH AFRICA TO EMBRACE GREEN ENERGY

Robben island to install a solar PV mini-grid which will help in reducing the island’s reliance on diesel generating system.

Green Energy which comes from natural resource such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, plants, algae and geothermal heat is expected to be embrace in Robben Island, South Africa. The project is the first step in a long-term initiative of going green in the Island.

Implementation of the project is under discussion so as to have many energy efficient project. The integrated system is expected to carry the entire daytime electricity load and prioritises solar PV energy generation in the area so as to have solar energy on cloudy days and at night.

The project is to have a solar PV mini-grid that has the capacity of generating 666.4 kilo Watt peak (kWp) of clean energy which will help in reducing the island’s reliance on diesel generating system.

Sola Future Energy is the designer and contractor of the project which will save 235 000 litres of diesel per annum or 50% of previous usage.

CEO of SOLA Future Energy, Dom Wills; “The microgrid on Robben Island is the largest solar and lithium-ion storage microgrid system in South Africa,”

According to him; “for Robben Island, we have chosen our partners carefully because we wanted to ensure highest quality, safety and sustainability.”
