SOUTH AFRICA’s POWER CUT WILL CONTINUE UNTIL ESKOM TACKLES THE CHALLENGES AT HAND

Eskom will cut 2,000 megawatt power from 9 a.m-11 p.m local time across the country.

Eskom instituted load-shedding after losing some of it’s generating station broken down at the same time. South Africa will face future power cuts if these issues are not well handled now.

Eskom generates 90% of South Africa’s power of which most of the stations are coal-fired. The reason for the breakdown is as a result of low supply of water to the pump storage and diesel  for it’s open cycle gas turbine. However, the company expressed certainty that the stations will be back to working standard in one week time.

The citizens of South Africa are expressing their frustration with regards to the power outage.

A financial crisis at the company rooted in soaring expenditure, huge cost overruns on two coal power stations and years of low tariff awards resulted in a loss of more than 20 billion rand ($1.3 billion) in the year to the end of March.

Unfortunately, the new electricity plan shy away from the primary purpose of specifying the optimal mix that could guide sensible investment decisions and instead settles on an uncomfortable compromise.
