TANZANIA TO GENERATE 10,000MW OF POWER BY 2025

Tanzania’s Deputy Energy Minister speaks to parliament on this huge plans

Plans are in motion by the Government in Tanzania to generate 10,000MW of power. In essence, expanding its current power generation capacity moving sixfold ahead from 1,602 megawatts to reach 10,000 megawatts by 2025. This will be achieved through investments in thermal and renewable energy, Deputy Energy Minister, Subira Mgalu told the parliament on Tuesday, 23rd April, 2019.

Mgalu said, “We need to have abundant and reliable power from an energy mix that includes hydro-power, natural gas, solar and wind”.

According to the Deputy Energy Minister, it plans to move sixfold ahead from 1,602 megawatts to reach 10,000 megawatts by 2025.

Despite reserves of over 57 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas. Tanzania still faces chronic power shortages. Moreover, the lack of power is hurting business and this has been a continuous complain by investors in the country.

Tanzania said, It plans to export surplus electricity to energy-starved nations in eastern and southern Africa. Once it has boosted its generation capacity. In other news, the nation is already partnering with Uganda in its oil and gas activities.
