Togo officially known as Togolese Republic is one of the smallest countries  in Africa with an estimated population of  7.6 million. From the 11th -16th century marked the migration of various tribes into the region. Togo and its surrounding region earned the name “The Slave Coast” because from the 16th -18th century the coastal region was a major trading center for Europeans to search for slaves. In 1884, Germany declared a region including present-day Togo as a protectorate called Togoland. While after World War I, rule over Togo was transferred to France. On April 27th Togo celebrated its independence from France on April 27 1960.
