FRESH TALKS ON WESTERN SAHARA TO BE ORGANISED BY UN.
UN makes more effort to stop violence over Western Sahara.
The UN agent for western Sahara is planning a meeting for return of negotiations between Morocco and Algeria next week. Horst Koehler, ex-director of the International Monetary Fund will start talks with Morocco on June 28. Afterwards, he will be going to Laayoune on June 29 to visit the UN observer.
Also, Koehler will travel to Tindouf in Algeria to meet the Polisario Front at an unconfirmed date.
Morocco and the Polisario Front fought over the Western Sahara from 1957 to 1991. UN attempts to bring peace between both parties has been frustrated since 2008.
The Security Council in April approved a US-drafted resolution that urged Morocco and the Polisario to prepare for talks, setting a six-month deadline for action.
Morocco maintains that negotiations on a settlement should focus on its proposal for autonomy for Western Sahara and rejects the Polisario’s insistence on an independence referendum.
