WASTE TO WEALTH: THE ROLE OF THE MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Waste to Wealth: The role of the mechanical engineer is a lecture delivered at the Investiture ceremony for the incoming chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Port Harcourt Chapter).

Engr. Denis A. A. Dania FNSE MNIMechE is a notable engineer with numerous accolades to his name. More so, He has held several offices within the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Port Harcourt Branch. In his long service to the society (1999 – till date), Engr. Denis has pioneered several innovations. To mention a few, He was instrumental to the introduction of the first e-newsletter and branch calendar for the society.

No wonder this investiture was well attended by dignitaries in the public and private sector. Most notable, is the head of service to the Rivers State Government, Mr. Rufus N. Godwin. Despite being a lawyer, He made some key contributions to the lecture theme. Anchoring on the theme, Engr. Victor Bandele, a senior management staff at the french national oil company, Total Exploration & Production spoke extensively on his lecture.

These are some highlights from the lecture.

  • Nigerians develop more than 32 million tons of solid waste annually.
  • Households generate more solid wastes than local industries, artisans and traders.
  • The collection of solid waste is between 20 – 30 %, which is really poor.
  • Reckless disposal of Municipal Solid Wastes  leads to blockage of sewers and drainage networks, and choking of water bodies.
  • Only a few states in Nigeria are taking proactive steps in developing the waste management industry.
  • Mechanical engineers need to see the business opportunity in solving the waste issues in Nigeria.
  • Engineers need to partner with each other and get activities going by tackling small waste issues first.

The day could not have ended without a delicious meal and the classic argument between mechanical and civil engineers. Well, let’s just say that civil engineers are the foundation of all engineers. If you think otherwise, you should argue with yourself 😛
