ZIMBABWE’S HEALTH MINISTER ARRESTED FOR EXPLOITING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
As the world shut its borders and cities to curb the pandemic, politicians came into the market square to loot funds meant for palliative and medical supplies. Reports coming out of Zimbabwe, suggest that the Health Minister Obadiah Moyo has been apprehended by police officers on suspicion of his involvement in a US$60 million corruption scandal meant for the procurement of medical supplies. You will recall that Zimbabwe is currently facing challenges with a currency rout that is putting pressure on its local currency.
According toDaily News newspaper, ‘the detention comes on the back of last week’s arrest of Harare businessman Delish Nguwaya. He is the local representative of foreign company, Drax International. Apparently, there is an allegation of a corrupt supplies contract for medical supplies.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over from long time leader Robert Mugabe after a military coup in 2017, has since cancelled the procurement deals. President Emmerson has been restricting the daily and monthly transaction of dollar within the country. Hence, all deals above the limit is subject to government scrutiny and approval.
