ELEGU ONE STOP BORDER POST HANDED OVER TO UGANDA REVENUE AUTHORITY

Ugandan Ministry of Transport and Works together with Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) have handed over the newly constructed Elegu One Stop Border Post (OSBP) to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

Just after construction of the new Elegu One Stop Border Post (OSBP); the Ugandan Ministry of Transport and Works and Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) have handed over the border post to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). The handover to the tax body, URA, is to quicken trade between Uganda and South Sudan.

The Elegu One Stop Border Post (OSBP) sits between Uganda and South Sudan. It serves as both the main entrance and departure locale for traffic and cargo between Uganda and South Sudan. The Construction of the new Elegu One Stop Border Post valued at about US$10 billion; received funding from Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) and also from some other development partners.

The new Elegu Border facility boasts of a freight house, gate house, power house, power supply, pump house, and waste treatment plant. It also has a light vehicle inspection shade, wet cargo verification building, parking lots, drive ways and boundary wall.

The New Border Post will also see Ugandan and South Sudanese agencies working together; to facilitate exports and imports. They will also work towards reducing costs and increasing the ease of doing business in both countries.

Some of the agencies with offices at the Elegu One Stop Border Post (OSBP); which will help in facilitating clearing of goods for import and export include; URA’s custom department, Immigration, Uganda National Bureau of Standards, National Drug Authority, and the Ministry of Agriculture. Commercial banks and Security Agencies will also have offices at the border post.

According to TMEA, by next year there will be introduction of non-intrusive scanners at the border to help uncover concealment and protect the society.
