CONSTRUCTION OF US$751.2m KENYA TANZANIA HIGHWAY BEGINS IN 2018
AfDB says construction of Kenya-Tanzania highway is set to begin by 2018
According to Lawson Zankli, AfDB Chief Regional Program Officer, although the African Development Bank (AfDB) is currently looking for financial partners who will be able to invest US$385.2m for the construction of the highway that will connect Kenya to Tanzania, it has said that construction work on the US$751.3m Kenya-Tanzania Highway is set to begin in 2018, as it has already set aside US$289m for the project.
The 445km Highway begins from Malindi in Kenya and moves through Mombasa and Lunga Lunga and then cuts through Tanga, Pangani and Saadani to Bagamoyo in Tanzania. The project also includes rehabilitation of the 250km Malindi-Lunga Lunga road and the upgrading of the 175km Tanga to Bagamoyo section to bitumen.
When the project kicks off next year, it is expected to be complemented within 36 months (3 years). The new road will boost tourism and trade along the Indian Ocean coast, as there will be ease of movement for tourist along the Kenya-Tanzania coastline.
