GhIE calls for government intervention over 36 broken water treatment plants

Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) has disclosed that over 36 water treatment plants are currently not functioning. This statement was made during the eighth National Development Forum held in Accra by immediate Past GhIE President Steve Anoff Amoaning-Yankson.

This damage or broken plants has resulted in sewage waste been directed to the sea from homes especially in Tema. According to immediate Past GhIE President in his lecture speech, left much to be desired and deserves immediate government intervention.

Mr Amoaning-Yankson, urge Ghanaians to turn waste into wealth as their are various business opportunities in the liquid waste management supply chain.

While on solid waste management, Amoaning-Yankson said, unidentified regulatory regime, institutional and financial weakness among others has been the challenges facing it.

However, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah said in 2020 that the ministry plans to engineer landfill sites, decommissioned, greened and turned them into parks.

Even as the Minister of Sanitation plans to turn the place to a park, they should not ignore the current challenges facing the plants. On a personal opinion, the country should look at tackling such problems now as the treatment plants is way to plenty just to be ignored.
